We have already reached the fifth event of the year, at the fantastic John O’Gaunt Golf Club in Bedfordshire. The weather was good for the 56 players who came to enjoy the course, which was in perfect condition.
We had 44 members and 12 guests attend. The average point score on the day was 29.61, with 17 birdies, 164 pars, 398 bogies, 391 double bogies or worse and 38 pickups.
The day was sponsored by Webster Digital, with some excellent prizes for the winners. Sponsors play a crucial role in making these events possible – thank you, Karl Gjertsen, for your ongoing support of the society and for sponsoring this event. We also had three members attending their first CBGS Event to receive their ties.

Wooden spoon
Having picked up the wooden spoon three times this year, your captain, Kari Sewell, well supported by his team of David Clark, David Mills and Jeremy Wager (thank you!), stayed out of the running for the wooden spoon with 33 points. So our wooden spoon winner, with 18 points, was Rob Smith. Comiserations!
Beat the pro competition
Karl and Webster Digital kindly organised an extra competition for us in their home course. The competition raised an extra £200 for the charity – thank you to Karl and the Pro.
The following managed to beat the Pro on the day and were entered to the draw: Ray Cawston, David Steele, Leigh Smart, Martin Harvey, Simon Whitmore, Bill Dastur, Chris Beaumont, Andrew Coury, Stella Parker, Hugh Blake, Adam Fernandes, Kyle Warren, David Clark, Tristan Drane, Graham Shaw, William Welch and Jeremy Farrant.
The winner, drawn at random, was Tristan Drane.
Cuts and shots back
Hugh Blake and Simon Whitmore – 1 shot cut
Martin Harvey – 3 shot cut
Fines
As always, we rounded off the day with a round of fines for various acts of stupidity. All proceeds go to our chosen charity this year, Little Miracles, who are most grateful. Here’s a selection of the best fines:
- Kenny Egan invited three guests and then decided not to play with them
- Craig Salisbury for requesting to play with three people, none of whom were registered
- Dickie Darler for booking himself twice for the event
- Karl for sending the wrong link in the email and failing to tell the Captain that a different company was sponsoring the event
- Martin Harvey’s trolley crossed at least two fairways before Shaun could catch it for him
- At least eight non-John O’Gaunt members used the members’ changing room
- Leigh Smart for nearly hitting two members of Team Tom and Team and wearing trainers for dinner
- John Aucland left his 7-iron on the green
- David Steele turned up so late that he missed the first 3 holes
- David Mills and Bill Dastur for not asking the Captain in advance if they could have a trolley on medical grounds
- Chris Newsom and Kenny Egan went from the 15th green to the 2nd tee.
- Various people for failing to pay the Beat the Pro entrance fee when they got back to the clubhouse
I hope you all enjoyed the day, and I look forward to seeing many of you at Wellingborough.
2025 CBGS Captain – Kari Sewell
