Located on the beautiful Northwest Norfolk coast and rated as one of Britain and Ireland’s ‘Top 100’ courses, Hunstanton Golf Club proved to be a stunning setting for our 7th order of merit event of the season.
The rolling fairways, mature rough and deep bunkers (one of which I got closer to than planned) left their mark on many of us on the day, yet the course played fair for the straighter hitters.
Despite the gloomy forecast, the weather was kind, and the persistent rain for the early starters turned to light drizzle before stopping completely before many groups hit their first shots.
A huge thanks to the 39 members and 9 guests who attended the day, where a relaxed dress code and rolling fish and chip dinner were in place to enable everyone to be on their way by 7pm. Sandra Norman and the team couldn’t do enough for us throughout the day and treated everyone to wonderful hospitality and a large portion of cod and chips followed by Vanilla cheesecake. The club also very kindly donated a complimentary 4-ball voucher valid until December 2025, with the lucky bidder Andrew Coury walking away with the prize.
Scores were indicative of the conditions on the day, ranging from 15-40 points across both members and guests, with an average score of 30.3 points.
Congratulations to Damien Goldsack for winning the day with 40 points. He walks away with his second win of the season and cements his spot at the top of the OOM table with just 3 events left to play. Congratulations also to Team Scally who won with 124 points. A special mention to guest Harry McKeown who took the best individual guest prize on countback with 35 points. Congratulations also to David Mills, Gary Coltman and Geoff Maskell for winning the skills prizes.
A big thanks to Tom Meeks from Price Bailey for sponsoring the day. With money from the sponsor, £10 raised from each ticket sold, £100 in fines and £350 for the 4-ball voucher, we made £1180 on the day for my chosen charity ACTION medical research. This is a fantastic amount of money, so many thanks once again for your support.
After proceedings at Hunstanton, 23 of us went off to Cromer for the evening and enjoyed a few drinks on the coast before playing the wonderful Royal Cromer the next day. Whilst very different to Hunstanton, this is truly a superb course and I’d encourage anyone to go and play it if you get the opportunity.
We now enter the summer break, but return to Wellingborough on 5th September, followed by Aspley Guise on 27th September and then GOGS on 17th October. Whilst Wellingborough is sold out and has a waiting list, there is still limited availability at Aspley Guise and GOGS went on sale the day after Hunstanton.
In addition to our forthcoming events, President’s Day at Girton Golf Club is on 29th July and with 17 members now booked, Peter is looking for a few more to make the day worthwhile. If you can support Peter, please do get booked up.
Lastly, a big thanks to Karl (Competition Golf) and Kari, my vice, for your continued support and for helping the day run so smoothly.
Have a fantastic summer and I look forward to seeing you at the last three events.
Steve
