Following our summer break we return to the ever popular Wellingborough, one of my favourite courses on the rota. The weather held out for us with some light rain coming during dinner and overall it was a great day.
To say the course was setup tricky would be an understatement… The greens were very quick despite recent maintenance with some pin positions verging on the diabolical! Despite this most people scored quite well with, as usual, some having a much better day than others.
The team at the club were fantastic as always and the food was typically excellent so a big thank you to Bev and Anne-Marie and the rest of the staff who made the day so great.
Scoring on the day was good given the conditions, with an average of 29.68. This was made up of 20 birdies, 169 pars, 319 bogeys, 311 double bogeys and 27 pickups.
Dartington Wealth Management were the sponsors for this event and Andrew Coury very generously provided some fantastic prizes with divot markers, towels, balls and of course wine.
On to the prizes;

Individual Members
3rd place, in full handicap protection mode with a remarkably suspicious 36 points was David “Juan” Clark
2nd place, a stunned David Gipp who was considering his life choices until hearing his score of 36 points beating Clark on countback
1st place, a majestic Steve Rhodes with a brilliant 42 points
Very well done, Steve.
Wooden Spoon
Our wooden spoon winner at Wellingborough with 19 points was Stella Parker.
Cuts and Shots Back
Unhappily I cannot in good conscience cut David Clark.
Steve Rhodes received a 4 shot cut.
Stella Parker will be delighted to receive 1 shot back, your next event will be a little easier.

Fines and Misdemeanours
And now we have the obligatory fines for silly behaviour. It was slim pickings this month however Simon Whitmore managed to dominate the list with a colossal run of mistakes and bad decisions. All in good humour and well received for a great cause. Every penny raised supports CPSL Mind, who do fantastic work and are hugely appreciative of our support. Here are a few of the fines from this round:
- Chris Beaumont for not reporting his guests handicap
- Simon Whitmore for wanting to attend Aspley Guise so much that he booked it twice
- Simon Whitmore for applying his discount at Aspley Guise to his guests booking
- Simon Whitmore for then not being able to attend Aspley Guise
- I fined myself for being completely unable to swing an iron, I might as well have played with a shovel
And a special thank you to Kari Sewell for very kindly photographing the prize-giving and providing an excellent selection of photos from the day.
To Finish
Once again, thank you all so much for your support in raising money for my charity of the year Mind CPSL. There have been some fantastic and truly memorable days over the course of the year so far and still with two events to go I’m sure there will be many more. It’s only a short time now until Aspley Guise on the 23rd September, I am keeping fingers crossed for weather and everything that it will actually go ahead this year… Then we have the season finale at the Gog Magog golf club on the 16th October with what will hopefully be a cracking battle for the Order of Merit.
