Following what seems like weeks of rain and strong winds, we were incredibly lucky to have a proper summer’s day to enjoy the glorious Wellingborough golf course.

This undulating parkland course was in superb condition, with lush fairways, many memorable holes and tricky greens. All complimented by the spectacular clubhouse. In my view, the best venue we have played this season.

Attendance of 44 (including 10 guests) was slightly above last year but below the season’s average of 50. Understandable as only 2 weeks after Thetford and at the start of school holidays.

Prior to the prize giving, I gave thanks to Dave Clark for persuading Barclays to make a very significant donation of £1,000 towards our charity of the year. This is a huge boost for Magpas Air Ambulance in what remains a challenging year for all charities. John Auckland of Tribefirst was forced to withdraw 10 days before and generously donated his £99 entry fee to Magpas.

Fines were levied for pretty much any excuse but paid with customary good grace by members knowing that it was going to an extremely good cause.

The event was sponsored by Leigh Smart of Yutree commercial insurance brokerage and underwriting agency. Leigh presented a range of excellent wines and bubbly to the lucky winners.

The contest for Top Member was even closer than Thetford when just 1 point separated the top 4 players. This time, the top 4 all scored 38 points. Jason Smithers (playing off 18) had the best back 9 and picked up first prize with Will Evans (off 22) 2nd and Chris Gledhill (off 24) in 3rd.

For the first time ever, Karl Gjertsen was unable to make the dinner (paid his fine without encouragement!) and I forgot to ask for the points at the other end of the table before he left. I therefore asked members who scored 22 or less to stand. Only Richard Waters on 22 points owned up but as I had forgotten the wooden spoon (fine for me!) I could not present it. However, it subsequently transpires that Gary Hanson 21 points and Graham Andrade 19 points had bettered (?) Richard’s score!

You obviously know what that means at your next event!
