Set in the picturesque surroundings of Audley End’s famous mansion and offering superb views over the historic market town, Saffron Walden Golf Club proved to be a fine setting for our 6th order of merit event of the season.

We were not so blessed with the weather on this occasion with several heavy showers throughout the afternoon, however, the course was in excellent condition with lush fairways and good greens.

A huge thanks to the 33 members and 8 guests who attended the day. As always, we were treated to wonderful hospitality and superb food by Debbie and the team, and they really couldn’t do enough for us throughout the day.

Whilst the course played tough if you left the fairway, scores were the highest of the season so far, ranging from 24 – 44 points across both members and guests, with an average of 31.85.

Congratulations to ‘The Postman’ Jeremy Wager for winning the day on 44 points. Congratulations also to Team Thomson who won with 125 points. A special mention to guest Rob Hall who took the best individual guest prize on 39 points. Congratulations also to David Gipp (nearest the pin on hole 5), Ray Cawston (nearest the pin on hole 11), Jeremy Farrant (nearest the pin in 2 on hole 12) and Paul French (nearest the pin on hole 18) for winning the skills prizes.

A big thanks to Leigh Smart from Yutree for sponsoring the day. Not only did Leigh put up some fantastic prizes, but he donated £1250 to my nominated charity for the year, ACTION medical research as a result of his sponsorship and work received by CBGS members. This was a wonderful gesture and is very much appreciated. This, in addition to £10 raised on each ticket sold and £100 in fines, ensured we raised just shy of £1800 on the day, so once again, thanks very much for your support.

Hunstanton, our next OOM event on 16th July is just round the corner. This is now fully booked, so if you would like to be added to the reserve list, please let me know. 24 members will be travelling to Cromer straight after proceedings end at Hunstanton for a few drinks and golf at Royal Cromer on 17th. This is a non OOM event but enables those able an opportunity to experience another wonderful Norfolk links course before returning back to Cambridgeshire.

After the summer break we head to Wellingborough on 5th September for our 8th OOM event of the season, followed by Aspley Guise on 27th September. Wellingborough is now sold out (please let me know if you would like to be added to the reserve list) but there is still availability for Aspley Guise, with 13 tickets sold at time of writing.

In addition to the above forthcoming events, President’s Day at Girton Golf Club is on 29th July. This is a non OOM event, with no requirement to change afterwards. We have 15 booked for this event so far, so please do support if you can and book asap so that Peter can manage numbers.

Lastly, a big thanks to Karl (Competition Golf) for ensuring the day runs so smoothly and to my Vice, Kari for your continued support.

I look forward to seeing you at your next event.
