What a way to finish the season! Having assembled 84 keen golfers in the Gogs clubhouse in readiness for a shotgun start at 1130, the prospects of the Old course being playable looked grim with heavy rain and considerable standing water. Fortunately, the rain stopped and the grounds staff worked wonders to clear the greens so that we could tee off from our respective holes at 1215. The Gogs did us proud in difficult circumstances.

With the rough having recently been cut back significantly and hardly a breath of wind, many players took full advantage of the favourable playing conditions to register the highest scores seen all season.

It was the day for our vertically challenged friends with former Captain, Adam Fernandes, taking first place with an impressive 42 points and our treasurer, Dickie Darler, just a point behind in third. Their teams also picked up second and third prizes and Dickie won nearest the pin on the 9th. By the end of the evening they both needed help in carrying away their haul! Rich Blount also had an excellent day coming second with 41 points off 14.

Only one point separated the top 5 teams with The Highway Men (Andy Turpin, Jeremy Farrant, Richard New and Ian Jacob’s) victorious with 124 points. The top 3 guests all scored 39 points with prospective member, John Lawes, coming first with a superior back 9. Other nearest the pin winners were Martin Claxton on the 4th and guest Tom Williams on the 11th in 2.

The round of the day went to Paul Houghton (playing off 5) who shot a fantastic 2 over par 72 for 39 points which secured just 9th place!

Obviously, the most prestigious prize for the season is the Anthony Barnes Award. Going into the final round, Dave Clark was hot favourite with Karl Gjertsen, 9 Points behind in second. Unfortunately, both blew up (the latter in spectacular fashion) and ended well out of the bonus points. In the meantime, Paul A Smith looked set to take the title but lost the opportunity by scoring just 1 point in his last 2 holes. Geoff Davies also fell just short despite an excellent round of 77. After convincing Dave he had blown it during dinner, it was great to see his reaction as he had in fact triumphed by just 2 points. Playing off 5, Dave has come close in previous seasons and fully deserves his success.

Many thanks to everyone who took part in the ‘Beat the Pro‘ challenge against Emily Slater on the 17th with just 11 out of 84 succeeding. Congratulations to Callum Dunsmore for winning the prize draw, a 4 ball voucher at the Gogs. As a Gogs member, he looked slighted disappointed although I’m sure he will find non members keen to join him for a round!

Despite being hugely talented and dedicated, it is tough funding life as a professional golfer with all the costs involved in travelling and entering competitions. Should any business or individual be interested in supporting or sponsoring Emily in her career, she would be delighted to hear from you …….

Special thanks to Tristan Drane of The One Group for sponsoring the event and providing a wonderful array of prizes for the lucky winners.

Finally, a huge thank to you all the members of this brilliant society for your support and kind comments over the last 7 months. It has been a blast! I am delighted to pass the baton onto Steve Gray who has already circulated an exciting schedule of events for 2024. Steve has been a great support to me this year and I have no doubt will be a superb Captain.
